Iraq has some 25 million unexploded mines and 90 million unexploded ordnance (UXO) items, according to February data from the Ministry of Environment, one of the greatest concentrations in the world.
Basrah, alone has 5 million landmines, mostly concentrated in border towns with Iran and Kuwait from the 1980’s Iran-Iraq war and the 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
An estimated
24 000 individuals, mostly civilians, are killed or injured by landmines and unexploded ordnance worldwide every year.
